A guide to avoiding extractions, restoring health with tooth removal services

Unnecessary extractions do not have to be a fact of life. We distinguish between “unnecessary” and “necessary” extractions because there are some types of teeth that are not needed for oral health and function, notably, “wisdom teeth.” At Williams Dental Studio in Stockbridge, we treat generations of family members across Northwest Georgia. Dr. Jessica Williams partners with patients of all ages to protect their teeth. With proactive care, Dr. Williams also helps patients avoid the pain, other distressing symptoms, and potential complications associated with wisdom teeth that do not develop properly.

Services and capabilities to restore healthy smiles

Extractions or the removal of teeth come in different forms. The process is often no more extensive than routine dental fillings. Such “simple extractions” involve removing an intact tooth visible above the gums with special techniques. With a gentle hand and professional dental instruments, we loosen the tooth in its socket and otherwise grasp and painlessly remove it. This approach may be appropriate for many different situations, including broken and decayed teeth. Here again, such services are avoidable with proactive care and by protecting the tooth. No tooth is superior in form and function from the one that developed naturally alongside the “rest” of you!

Now, surgical or “complex” extractions may be in order for teeth with more extensive damage. Portions of the tooth may be trapped in the bone, and these teeth may largely be inaccessible. So, Dr. Williams uses special techniques and tools to open up and access the tooth. Once the tooth is accessed, she can then loosen and remove it. A “wisdom tooth” or third molar may be removed in this manner. Often, these teeth do not have sufficient room in the mouth to develop correctly by the time they erupt in our late teens and early adulthood. This developmental complication can result in the tooth becoming “trapped” or impacted.

All of these procedures are completed with the utmost care and patient comfort at heart. We use localized anesthetic and can also discuss sedative options to support relaxation and a stress- and fear-free experience at our office. As true partners in our patients’ health, Williams Dental Studio provides comprehensive guidance and support for after-care to ensure the best possible outcomes for our patients. Wisdom teeth are not necessary for proper function, so they do not need to be replaced. For other teeth, Dr. Williams will discuss options to replace those that were extracted with conventional bridges, dentures, and implants.

Frequently Asked Questions About Extractions

Why would I need a tooth extraction?

A tooth extraction may be necessary for multiple reasons. Severe tooth decay that has damaged the tooth beyond repair is one of the most common causes. Infections that cannot be treated with a root canal, advanced periodontal disease, or trauma to the tooth may also require removal. Additionally, extractions are often recommended for orthodontic reasons, such as overcrowding. Impacted or problematic wisdom teeth are another common reason for extraction.

Is tooth extraction painful?

Thanks to modern dentistry and effective anesthesia, most patients feel minimal to no pain during the extraction. Your dentist will numb the area completely before beginning the procedure. You may feel pressure, but not sharp pain. After the procedure, any discomfort is generally manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers, and your dentist may prescribe stronger medication if needed. Following post-op instructions also helps reduce discomfort and promote healing.

What is the recovery time after a tooth extraction?

Recovery time may vary based on the complexity of the extraction and your overall health. For most simple extractions, initial healing takes about 7 to 10 days. You may experience mild swelling, tenderness, or slight bleeding for the first 24–48 hours. More complex extractions, such as wisdom or impacted teeth, may take up to two or more weeks to heal. It’s important to follow aftercare instructions and avoid disturbing the extraction site.

What can I eat after a tooth extraction?

Soft, cool, and non-acidic foods are ideal for the first few days after a tooth extraction. Opt for applesauce, mashed potatoes, yogurt, pudding, smoothies (without straws), and soup at room temperature. Avoid hot, crunchy, spicy, or chewy foods that could irritate the site or dislodge the blood clot. As healing progresses, you can gradually reintroduce firmer foods into your diet.

What is dry socket and how can I prevent it?

Dry socket is a painful condition where the blood clot at the extraction site that dissolves too soon or becomes dislodged, exposing the underlying nerves and bone. This can lead to delayed healing and intense pain. To prevent dry socket, avoid using straws, smoking, spitting forcefully, or brushing the area aggressively in the first few days post-extraction. Follow all of your dentist’s post-op instructions carefully.

Do I need to replace a tooth after it’s been extracted?

Yes, replacing a missing tooth is suggested to prevent shifting of surrounding teeth, bite problems, and bone loss. Common replacement options include dental implants, bridges, and partial dentures. Your dentist will discuss the best restoration option based on your oral health, preferences, and budget.

Are wisdom teeth always removed?

Not all wisdom teeth need to be removed. Extraction may be unnecessary if your wisdom teeth are healthy, fully erupted, and properly aligned. However, removal is usually recommended if they are impacted, crowding other teeth, causing pain, or at risk of infection. Your dentist or oral surgeon will evaluate your situation using X-rays and a clinical exam.
