If your Stockbridge, Georgia dentist recommends wisdom teeth extraction, it’s generally because these teeth are causing or have the potential to cause oral health problems. Fortunately, wisdom teeth removal is a fairly common procedure at Williams Dental Studio and can be done safely and effectively by Dr. Jessica Williams and our dental team. Here are some questions we’re often asked about this treatment.
Wisdom teeth are often referred to as your “third molars.” They’re teeth in the back of your mouth that may start to come in between the ages of 18 and 25. Most people develop all four wisdom teeth, while others develop one or two. It’s rare, but there are people who never develop wisdom teeth at all.
Wisdom teeth don’t always need to be removed. If these teeth aren’t causing problems and there’s enough space in your jaw to accommodate them, there’s no real need for extraction. In most cases, however, this is the exception, not the rule. Due to a lack of space for wisdom teeth to emerge, most people will likely have to have them removed.
Gum pain and tenderness in the back of your mouth could be early warning signs of the emergence of wisdom teeth. Dr. Williams will take x-rays to see what state these teeth are in and determine if it’s best to have them removed. Retaining wisdom teeth could lead to problems with:
An impacted wisdom tooth is a third molar that gets stuck in your jaw due to a lack of space for it to emerge. It can be quite painful, and if not managed properly, it can cause serious complications later on. Dr. Williams recommends extraction for impacted wisdom teeth to protect your oral health.
Having wisdom teeth removed can cause some discomfort, but the level of pain varies from person to person. You need not worry about pain or discomfort during wisdom teeth removal, as Dr. Williams will numb your mouth for this procedure. Afterward, some soreness and swelling are normal, but pain can usually be managed with prescribed medication or over-the-counter pain relievers.
Recovery is generally three to five days, after which you should start to feel normal again. Full healing, however, can take up to two weeks. Dr. Williams will give you detailed instructions on how to care for your mouth after your extraction. By following these instructions, you’re more likely to have a smooth, successful recovery.
